Chris Stops' background

He has worked professionally on 5 continents – Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Australia in and around the packaging and mining industries. This has exposed him to a broad spectrum of industrial environments – from pharmaceuticals, through the food industry, paper, and steel mills, to underground coal and gold mines.

Additionally he has been exposed to the contrasting safety cultures of these continents. Africa and Australia lay at the extremes of these during the 1980’s when Africa saw human life as being plentiful and expendable, and Australia took the opposite view. At that time Australia’s workers’ compensation / employers’ liability claims led the world in terms of their size, particularly for computer keyboard induced repetitive strain injuries. The fear of similar levels being reached in Europe was a partial reason for the development of the Visual Display Screen Equipment regulations in the early 1990s.

The culmination of this varied experience is a belief that solutions to safety management problems are intrinsically linked to the business culture in which they occur and must be chosen accordingly.

From the mid 1990’s onwards he was responsible for the day to day planning and implementation of health and safety at a carton manufacturing site. This was allied to the implementation of a Royal Society of Health hygiene accreditation standard, and ensuring smooth implementation was integrated in a more general manufacturing cultural change programme. He was also responsible for liaising with statutory authorities for health and safety.
